Commonly called stonecrop in reference to the frequent sighting of the genus in the wild growing on rocks or stony ledges. Flowers appear in large, 3-6" across, flattened heads (cymes) atop stems of grayish-green, fleshy, rounded, succulent-like leaves growing in upright to slightly spreading clumps, typically to 2' tall. AUTUMN JOY is a clump-forming perennial that features masses of tiny, star-like flowers which emerge pink, gradually change to deep rose-red and then coppery-rust in autumn as they die. Many hylotelephiums and sedums are commonly called stonecrop in reference to the frequent sighting of the genus in the wild growing on rocks or stony ledges. Removing spent flowers will encourage new blooms. Adjust your plant care to achieve better flowering results. Partial shade, too much fertilizer, and wet soil will prevent flowers from blooming. Genus name probably honor Telephus, King of Mysia and son of Hercules. Full sun and well-draining soil increase the frequency and health of 'Autumn Joy' blooms. Many species and hybrids were formerly place in the genus Sedum. They are commonly called stonecrop and are excellent plants for fall gardens. Sedum is one of the most dependable and lovely succulent perennial flowers belonging to the family Crassulaceae (stonecrop) tracing its origins to China. The Autumn Joy sedum, unlike many other Eurasian species imported to North America, is not invasive. With the exception of the most northern states, the southern tip of Florida, and the southern California coastline, it has adapted successfully to the United States. Each leaf is thick, glabrous, fleshy, and measure 1.5 to 4 inches long. Autumn Joy sedum is a cultivar of the Eurasia-native Hylotelephium telephium. The margins are coarsely serrated and curved. The leaf blades are flat, elliptic, and ovate. They range in color from green-bluish green, dull green to blue-green, or depending on the cultivar. They grow more or less erect and have dense, domed flower heads composed of tiny starry flowers, much like a colorful broccoli head. Border sedums generally fall within the 1- to 2- foot range, and Autumn Joy is the most familiar example. Hylotelephium is a genus of about 33 species of drought-tolerant herbaceous perennials native to Asia, Europe and North America. The leaves are simple and may appear alternate, opposite, or whorled. Autumn Joy sedum is tall enough to stand out in your borders.
